Overview

Before and after oral surgery, following clear surgical instructions is essential for optimal healing and comfort. Proper guidance on diet, activity, medications, wound care, and signs to watch for can help reduce complications, minimize pain and swelling, and support a smooth recovery process after your procedure.

Pre-Operative Instructions

The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for surgery. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any last-minute questions.

It may be important to stop taking 325mg aspirin 7-10 days prior to your surgery. If you are taking Coumadin, Plavix, or another blood thinner, please follow the pre-operative instructions given to you by your physician. Patients with diabetes often need to modify their medications; be sure to consult with our office. Please take any prescribed medications as directed before your surgery.

In order to evaluate your progress and healing, we will see you multiple times for post-operative checks during the first few weeks. Following completion of therapy, we will also look forward to seeing you back for a cleaning and an examination about 10-12 weeks following the surgery.

Post-Operative Instructions

These instructions apply to most surgical procedures. They are designed to help you minimize discomfort and inform you of situations that may require special attention.

It is not unusual to have some discomfort following your surgical procedure. You will be given prescriptions for medications to reduce or eliminate any discomfort. Please take all medications as directed.

Swelling may occur following your surgical procedure and will typically increase 2-3 days after the procedure. Additionally, a small amount of bleeding is normal during the first 24-48 hours. Please follow the instructions provided for post-treatment care. If you have any concerns, please contact the office.

“Dr.’s Wilson are THE pros in Dallas at what they do. This is my second experience with them to have a dental implant. He eased my anxiety, and everything went great. I really appreciate that he understood my concerns and eased my mind. He spent so much time with me before, during, and even weeks after the procedure, I always felt comfortable and knew what to expect.”
